Dear Rebecca Ann,

My dog loves to stick his head out of the car window when we go for rides. I have heard that you shouldn't allow your dog to do this. Can you tell me what all the fuss is about?

Hi Jess & Murphy,

You are right, most dogs do love to feel the wind in their face and it is actually quite comical to see a dog's ears and lips flap in the breeze! However, there are a few reasons why it is not a good idea to allow your dog to get into this habit.

Small particles could get into your dog's eyes or ears causing injury. Large objects such as tree branches hanging onto a street, or road construction signs could also cause injury to a dog whose head is sticking out of the window.

If you were to get into an accident, a dog with his head outside of the window could be seriously injured or even killed.

If you want to play it safe, I suggest that Murphy be placed in a cage, crate, traveling harness, or otherwise restrained every time you go for a ride.

Your dog depends on you to make some very important decisions for him, and this is one of those times that being safe is better than being sorry.

Sharing in your love of animals,

Rebecca Ann
